FAQ

German version

If you complete a certificate as part of your studies at our university, you benefit in several ways. A certificate is not only an additional qualification; in some cases, it is already an integral part of your degree programme (e.g., MAST3R with Profile). It broadens your studies through individualized and transdisciplinary content and meets the requirements of a modern 21st-century university.
A certificate enables you to tailor your studies to your individual interests and to prepare optimally for the challenges of today’s professional world. You complete the programme with an official certificate document, which you can include with your application materials. This additional qualification can help you stand out from other applicants, as it demonstrates that you have engaged in depth with specific areas of competence. Employers often value skills that go beyond subject-specific knowledge, and a certificate can demonstrate this added value.
The most important requirement is that you are enrolled at JGU as a student in a bachelor’s or master’s degree programme, or that you will be enrolled by 1 April / 1 October at the latest if you are currently in the application phase. Further individual requirements can be found on the pages of the respective certificates.
You must apply for certificates within specified application periods. If you are currently applying for a regular degree programme at JGU, you can also apply within the deadlines listed below. Please note that the application deadlines for certificates may differ from those for your bachelor’s or master’s degree programme.
In almost all cases, applications for a certificate are submitted via the online application portal JOGU-StINe. The following step-by-step guide explains the application process:

    1. After clicking the link above, first log in with your account. Once logged in, click on the “Application/Registration” tab and then on “My applications”.
    2. If your personal details are not pre-filled under “My details”, please enter them first, select “Study programme with degree” under section 2, and click “Save”. If your details are already filled in, you do not need to do anything further.
    3. Click on “search in the study programme catalogue”.
    4. In the study programme search, select “Certificate / certificate document” under type of qualification.
    5. Select the desired certificate.
    6. Complete the form and submit it. Please check that the status of your application is “submitted”.
    7. You will receive an automatic confirmation email after successful submission. Note: If you do not receive a confirmation email or if the status of your application is “open”, you have not yet finalized the submission!

In some cases, applications for certificates (currently: Certificate for international competence, Excellence Track (Physics), and QUEST) are submitted directly to the unit that offers the certificate. Further information can be found on the linked information pages.

Application process via JOGU-StINe: After the application deadline, all received applications are first checked for formal eligibility and, if necessary, a lottery procedure is carried out. Afterwards (mid-September or mid-March), you will receive an email informing you whether you have been accepted or rejected, and you will be enrolled in the certificate study programme (you will receive a separate email about this).
Other application procedures (currently: Certificate for international competence and Excellence Track (Physics)): In these cases, you will be informed separately by the unit offering the certificate.
For questions, please contact the person listed on the respective certificate website or the indicated study office. For technical and general questions about the certificate programmes, we are also happy to help at zertifikate@uni-mainz.de.
In MAST3R degree programmes, the credits earned through certificates count toward the 120 ECTS required for the master’s degree (if you choose Profile 3; see the overview of the master model).
For students in degree programmes under the Master Model Profilierung who want to have a certificate recognized in Profile 3, the following applies to the recognition of credits: Courses and modules that have already been completed in the same or substantially equivalent form in the bachelor’s degree programme underlying the master’s degree programme, or in the master’s degree programme itself, cannot be taken or recognized again within the certificate programme. In such cases, another suitable course must be completed. If this is not possible, the certificate programme unfortunately cannot be completed. In individual cases, the responsible examination board will decide.
For advice, please contact zertifikate@uni-mainz.de.
As long as you are enrolled at JGU in both the bachelor’s and the master’s degree programme, it is entirely possible to start a certificate during your bachelor’s studies and complete it during your master’s studies.
Before the end of the respective application period:

  • You can withdraw your submitted application easily in your Jogustine account using the “withdraw” button.

After the end of the respective application period, but before enrolment (you will receive an email once you have been enrolled in a certificate programme):

After enrolment (you will receive an email once you have been enrolled in a certificate programme):

  • Please first contact your responsible certificate study office to deregister from the module and courses. Please carry out this step yourself if the course registration/deregistration periods are still open.
  • Afterwards, you can submit an online request in your personal JOGU-StINe area under “Service -> Applications -> Electronic applications -> Application to terminate one or more degree programmes” to terminate the certificate programme.
  • Please note: The application is only available online during the following periods: 01/06 to 01/09 (deregistration effective at the end of the summer semester) & 01/12 to 01/03 (deregistration effective at the end of the winter semester). Deregistration therefore only takes effect in the following semester; however, this has no negative consequences for you.
Study and examination achievements completed at a higher education institution in Germany or abroad (with module reference) can be recognized/credited upon application up to a maximum of half of the credits required in the certificate programme. For certificates worth 10 credits, you can have a maximum of 5 recognized; for certificates worth 12 credits, a maximum of 6.
If you have additionally attended further courses as additional qualifications that are not or were not part of your regular studies, these may be fully credited after review.
An application form for recognition/credit transfer can be found in our download area. Please note that this form is only valid for the interdisciplinary certificates: Daten und Informationen; Rara: Handschriften, Alte Drucke, Künstlerbücher; Veranstaltungsmanagement & Zukunftszertifikat – Klimakrise und Nachhaltigkeit. For all other certificates, please contact the persons listed.
For students in degree programmes under the Master Model Profilierung who want to have a certificate recognized for Profile 3, the following also applies: Courses and modules that have already been completed in the same or substantially equivalent form in the bachelor’s degree programme underlying the master’s degree programme, or in the master’s degree programme itself, cannot be taken or recognized again within the certificate programme. In such cases, another suitable course or another suitable module must be completed. If this is not possible, the certificate programme unfortunately cannot be completed.
For advice, please contact zertifikate@uni-mainz.de. Further information can also be found in the overarching examination regulations for study programmes leading to a certificate qualification and in the FAQ of the Master Model Profilierung.
In degree programmes under the Master Model Profilierung, credits earned through certificates can be recognized toward the 120 ECTS required for the master’s degree, provided that you have chosen Profile 3. For questions about the Master Model Profilierung, please consult the FAQ pages of the master model and contact mast3r@uni-mainz.de.
In other degree programmes, or in MAST3R programmes without Profile 3, credits may also be recognized; however, this depends on the respective examination regulations. For questions, please contact the study office of your regular degree programme.
Information on the required study and examination achievements for the certificates can be found on the respective certificate pages. As a rule, there are around one to two coursework requirements and one module examination (partly graded). Further information can also be found in the overarching examination regulations for study programmes leading to a certificate qualification.
If you do not pass coursework requirements within the certificate programme, you may repeat them as often as necessary. If you do not pass the module examination of a certificate programme, you may repeat it up to two times. If you still do not pass, we unfortunately cannot issue a certificate document; the certificate is considered failed and your entitlement to sit the examination in this certificate programme expires. However, this has no negative impact on your regular degree programme and it will not appear negatively on your Transcript of Records. Further information can also be found in the overarching examination regulations for study programmes leading to a certificate qualification.
Different examination boards are responsible for the individual certificates. Please refer to the “Examination boards” subpage for the respective responsibilities.
Upon request, you will receive the certificate document and the corresponding Transcript of Records from the responsible study office. The contact persons can be found on the individual certificate pages.
Certificates are a valuable qualification and should definitely be listed in your CV. If the certificate is particularly relevant to the position you are applying for, it may also be useful to mention it in your cover letter/motivation letter. For individual advice on this topic, the JGU Career Service is available to help you optimize your application documents and present your certificates as effectively as possible.
